Tom Proby, a young English engineer, arrives in a small town in Sicily to study the possibility of planting an oil refinery in the area. The local mafia is divided: the faction that heads the Baron Miscens attempts with all means of hindering the initiative, while the group linked to Don Calogero Minniti puts into practice every gimmick to convince the engineer to carry out the project. When Proby falls in love with Rosa, the daughter of Don Calogero, the installation of the refinery seems to be what she has done. The Misconi Baron, eager to take revenge, reacted drastically, abducting the girl from his assassins. According to the Sicilian mentality the young man is now compromised and will have to marry the Baron.
Proby also insists on marrying Rosa, but Don Calogero, respectful of the laws of his own country, declines firmly. With the great pain of the young engineer, the wedding is celebrated but at the exit of the church an anonymous blow of lupara lightning the bridegroom. Rosa can thus join in marriage with Proby, in full respect of Sicilian customs.
